COMMUNITY OUTREACH
At Winchester Boxing Club we provide high quality boxing training and coaching to meet many different desires and needs. From the absolute beginner to the carded competitive boxer; from those wanting to get fit through our many classes and circuits to those who want to prepare for the working day with a bags and abs session; from those who want to meet with friends through the club to those who wish to make new friends at the club; from those wanting one on one coaching to those preferring a class or group experience; all can be accommodated regardless of age, gender, sexual preference, race, faith, disability or employment status. We are a club for all. We recognise that we are part of a wider community and are always eager to contribute to this community. Here are some examples (and we are always open to further suggestions) of what we do today:
Winchester Beacon Night Shelter:
For several years we have provided free training as well as unlimited access to Classes and Open Gym sessions for residents of WBNS. Also, we have donated clothes, food and equipment and have led several fundraising events. The individuals’ status is not shared beyond the Coaching Team where it is on a need to know basis unless the individual chooses otherwise.
Winchester Emmaus Night Shelter:
For several years we have provided free training as well as unlimited access to Classes and Open Gym sessions for residents of the Emmaus shelter. The individuals’ status is not shared beyond the Coaching Team where it is on a need to know basis unless the individual chooses otherwise.
Winchester Go LD:
This organisation enables adults with learning disabilities to live their lives to the full with the choices and independence they want. Every Thursday between 11am and 12.00 noon we provide free boxing training to a growing number of their members. Classes are managed according to individual capabilities, all equipment is provided, and we are in the process of introducing their attending membership to a Boxing Awards qualification program.
STREET REACH:
This organisation supports young people in need through weekly outreach sessions, youth club nights, drop-in projects and trips. Their emphasis is a ‘detached approach’ in targeted areas where the most need is identified. We have delivered a number of dedicated boxing training classes for this group of young people which remains an on-demand service we are always ready to provide.
Schools:
We have run a number of instructional programs introducing the many skills of boxing to pupils at school premises or at our club. These schools have included, for example, Compton All Saints C of E Primary School, Coppice Spring School, Sparsholt College, St Swithun’s School, and Thames Valley School.
Disability Inclusion:
Our participants and members include many with physical and/or mental health challenges including Autism (across the spectrum), ADHD, Dyspraxia, Downs Syndrome, Parkinsonism, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, Anxiety, Anger, Physical Disabilities, Dyskinesia. We cater for all in our Disability Training sessions, Inclusive Boxing sessions, and in general training sessions as well. Any person with a disability or significant financial difficulty may qualify for free inclusion in return for demonstrating a volunteer activity somewhere in the community.
